What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a medical term that describes skin that is darker in certain areas than others. It is usually harmless, but it can make those suffering with dark spots and hyperpigmentation feel very self conscious.

It occurs when special cells in the skin make too much of the pigment called melanin. Hyperpigmentation may appear as age spots, freckles, or larger areas of darkened skin. Hyperpigmentation may be caused by injury or inflammation of the skin, sun damage, abnormal skin growths, hormone changes, pregnancy, or other medical conditions. Certain medicines or drugs, can also cause hyperpigmentation.

What can you do to fade age spots and hyperpigmentation? First, age spots (dark spots) are caused by the sun, so wearing a high SPF daily is imperative. Even if it's winter time or cloudy outside, the sun's strong rays will penetrate your skin so protecting it is key. Your skin is also at risk when driving in your car, as the sun's powerful rays go right through the window. Using the right skincare products can have a major effect on fading those darker, problem areas.
